Ying-er 2006

We adopted our daughter Charlotte Xiao from China in 2006. ("ying-er" means baby in mandarin). This blog tells our story about building a family of 4, and the on-going joys/trials in our lives.

Camping at Lake Superior Provincial Park

July 28 to Aug 5

Holidays! Yes – that time of year. Load the kids in the car and head out on the family holiday for a week.

We decided to do it a bit differently this year. Since we were going to Agawa Bay, Lake Superior Provincial Park, which is a 11 hour drive from here (i.e. 14 hours with kids), we split up. Charlotte, AJ and I flew on Bearskin Airlines to Sault Ste. Marie (an adventure in itself) , and Steve drove. Now…you ask….who got the better deal? Steve had a drive for 11 hours, and I only had to travel for 6 or so. HOWEVER, I was on a 20-seater plan with no bathroom (yes, you read that right), one stopover and 2 small children, and Steve got a full night’s sleep at home and then 11 hours of solitude. Gold, baby, that’s pure gold.

Anyway, on to our vacation. I’ll let the photos tell most of the story. It was awesome. We spent most of our time on the beach, and it was even warm enough to go in the water. This is a rarity for Superior. If we weren’t there we were riding around the campground on bikes or playing with the other kids.

AJ had a blast visiting/playing with Casey, Jack and Odin. Here is the gang

Char went nuts for all the rocks on the beach, and was pretty good about not eating them…most of the time.

We tried the backpack for the first time and although Char didn’t seem thrilled, she didn’t hate it either. She just did what she usually does when we introduce a new thing, She put on a serious face and looked like she was thinking “Hmmmmmm” all the time.

Char also spent some time perfecting her technique for escaping from the dining shelter. Notice the "he, he, he - catch me if you can" look, followed by the escape and then the victory smile.

My cousin Paul got a new sailboat, so both Char and AJ got to go for their first sail. Char didn't think much of the lifejacket, but she seemed to enjoy the ride. AJ, of course, wanted to go every day. I've also posted a photo of Char and I on dry land so you can admire my biceps. My arms are getting mighty strong from lugging the lovely Miss Charlotte around all day.
In keeping with the theme, Charlotte’s days were absolutely wonderful and her nights were God-awful. Even worse than usual. Ah well, I think my body is adjusting to it. I don’t seem as tired anymore.

And, naturally, her transition back into our home environment has been equally awful. She is now refusing to sleep in her crib. I guess she must prefer the Pack ‘N Play or something, although you’d certainly never guess that from they way she acted while we were camping. To get her to sleep we now have to wait until she is tired enough to fall asleep in my arms. On Tuesday that meant 10:00 pm. Hell, I don’t usually stay up that late!

We’ve now added a Fisher Price Aquarium to her crib to see if that makes her love it more. It worked like a charm for AJ…but Char is a woman of significant determination, so we’ll have to see.
Ah yes, and tooth #5 has finally made its appearance. Notice the drool!!

Now you are all officially up to date.
Whew.
